Sod Calculator — How Much Sod or Turf You Need

Measure a lawn in rectangles and get the rolls, slabs or pallets of sod (turf) to order, with an adjustable allowance for cutting around beds and curves.

Sod to order EXAMPLE255 rolls2 x 5 ft, 10 sq ft each, covers 2,550 sq ft, 5% extra for wasteThat is 5 pallets (500 sq ft each) plus 5 rolls.

An answer marked EXAMPLE is worked out from the page’s sample values. Type your own over the values marked SAMPLE to make it yours.

Up to 8. They are added together before anything is rounded.

Split an odd-shaped lawn into simple pieces and measure each one. Curved edges are handled by the extra-material control below, not by a shape.

ftSAMPLE

Measured from one edge of the area to the opposite edge, across the ground being covered. Measure the ground, not the fence line.

ftSAMPLE

Measured from one side of the area to the other side, square to the length.

There is no national standard. Rolls and slabs are what named producers publish; if a supplier sells something else, pick the last option and enter what one piece covers.

10 sq ft a piece — Super-Sod

Producers publish anywhere from 400 to 600 square feet for the same word "pallet" — a half-again difference. Confirm it before buying by the pallet.

Curved and angled edges cost more in offcuts, which is why the suggested extra doubles for them. The control stays yours to change either way.

Coverage of one piece 10 sq ft

Coverage of one pallet 500 sq ft

5%

Now 5% for straight-edged rectangular yards with clean edges, the figure Quality Turf publishes for that. Change it to match how much turf the shape of the lawn will cost you in offcuts. Source
